Learning the guitar needs dedication. Just like learning new things at work, it needs focus and attention. Most often, when we see someone plucking those strings so easily and beautifully, we tend to have the feeling to grab a guitar and we just want to learn immediately... and get frustrated afterwards.
Learning to play a guitar needs time, and if you can maintain your interest until you can play an entire song, you will find it easy to master the skill. If you are indeed very interested to play the guitar, here are five things you must be aware of. If you can overcome these hurdles in playing the guitar, you are indeed prepared to become a musician.
1. 'It's so hard to reach those strings'
The very first thing you might be looking at now is your guitar chord chart. We all start with those books illustrating the frets and the finger placement of the different chords. D chord, G chord, C chord... it may be the simplest to do but then here comes the bar chords. You may find it hard at first but eventually, when your fingers are flexible enough to glide through those strings, it could be a joy to see your fingers positioned like a pro.
2. 'I can't produce a good sound'
When you get to learn where to place your fingers on the frets, you start to strum with your other hand, and you would probably hear a bad sound. Don't be frustrated though. All you have to do is press on the strings hard to produce the sound. If your fingers get the hang of it, it will never be an effort to produce a tune.
3. 'My fingers get numb and painful'
Due to constant friction with the tip of your fingers with the guitar strings, I suppose nobody learned the guitar without some pain. Indeed, it can be painful but even then, do not stop practicing. You will realize then that the more you practice, the faster the pain will disappear. Of course, your skin will form calluses due to constant friction.
4. 'I have to look at those strings!'
Another challenge in learning to play a guitar is not looking at your fingers when playing. How amazing it is to look at Carlo Santana strumming his way to that danceable tune without even glancing at his fingers. The fastest way to learn the guitar is probably memorize the chords and master your hand positions. When your hand constantly makes similar movements repeatedly, it allows our minds to record that movement and we can eventually do that again without even thinking about it. So be patient. You will eventually reach that stage.
5. 'What is F#Aug?'
You may be frustrated on eventually knowing how to strum and make the sound but when you get to the part that the chord is unfamiliar, you would want to skip or avoid it. Relax. Guitar masters say if you encounter a not so familiar chord, go ahead, find it and learn it. Do not get stuck with the simple ones. Otherwise, you will never bring your skills to a higher level.
So these are things that you should overcome in learning to play a guitar. If you can overcome these little frustrations in the beginning, you surely have a bright future in becoming a guitar master.
